SEO has really taken a shift to Content Building. Link building isn't nearly as important as it used to be but can still dramatically improve ranking and domain authority. It's important to not violate Google's terms of service and get incoming links the legit way. Having lots of good and useful content is a great way to get natural and organic incoming links.
Before you work on the incoming links, work on having an excellent and useful website with lots of content and lots of pages that gets updated constantly. Just having lots of UNIQUE, useful and fresh content alone will drastically improve rankings and is by far the most important thing you can do, especially in the beginning. Offer a useful free service on your site, and take advantage of your web sites users and fans and have them add to content on your site. Adding a blog or forum is a great way to add lots of fresh content to your site, while having your users help contribute to adding content by the blogging comments or forum posts.
Also adding a Facebook Like, Twitter Tweet, and Google +1 buttons to the top of every page, can really help your rankings. Google is showing a shift towards liking sites with lots of content and social media activity, while having less of an interest in incoming links. If you engage in Link schemes it could actually hurt your rankings and get your web site deindexed from Google.
Make sure you focus on the on-page optimization for each page, and have the right keywords on each page. Optimize the url, title, and alt tags with the proper keywords.
Once you have a great site, adding your website to a couple of paid directories that have a good reputation for SEO can help. Also consider becoming a guest blogger or donate your time to other well ranked sites and ask for an incoming link with good descriptive anchor text in the link.
