What is a System Restore?

Windows System Restore to an Earlier Date

A Windows System Restore will restore your computer's settings to an earlier date. It's an excellent way to fix problems by undoing changes to your PC. The system restore will not delete your documents and is reversible. If you are having some type of system problem, try running the System Restore to restore your system to a previous date.

Windows is automatically setup to create system restore points on a regular basis. You can also create system restore points manually.

The System Restore does not restore documents, so remember to back up your files regularily. If you need help with recovering a file, please try the Eugene Computer Geeks Free Support Chat.

How do I do a System Restore?

Press the Windows Start button and goto "All Programs" -------> Accessories ---------> System Tools -------> System Restore

If you need to restore your computer to its original factory state so that it acts and behaves like a brand new computer, you will need to do a Full Factory Restore which is very differen't from a Windows System Restore.

12:04:03 Geek2 Are you sure there wasn't something else plugged into the computer? Cuz its saved on the E:\ which isn't in your computer right now
12:04:11 guest438 they just asked if ive ever performed a system restore on my computer before
12:04:33 Geek2 System Restore wont work
12:04:33 guest438 yes
12:04:39 Geek2 It wasn't saved on your computer
12:04:46 Geek2 I promise you this

12:04:58 Geek2 The file was never saved on your computer
12:04:59 Geek2 so
12:05:04 Geek2 A system restore wont work
12:05:13 Geek2 I'd ask to borrow the flash drive
12:05:27 Geek2 Are you sure there wasn't a different flash drive in, or an external harddrive?
12:05:32 Geek2 OR some type of storage device
12:05:42 Geek2 possibly even a cell phone?
12:06:14 guest438 nothing, just that and my charger
12:06:14 Geek2 Tell your friend your computer only has a C and D drive. The file was saved on the E drive
12:06:37 Geek2 It was def saved on the flash drive. Ask them if you can borrow it

13:57:05 Geek2 Is it just a problem with dates?
13:57:21 Geek2 Because it could be some sort of issue related to the XP time and date
13:57:33 guest67 no if asked to enter a catagory same thing
13:58:07 Geek2 Could you give me a very specific and detailed example? It would help me understand the problem better. What exactly happens?
13:58:19 Geek2 Some of the options you have to fix it:
13:58:33 Geek2 A windows system restore to an earlier date. (You wont loose any files)
13:58:51 Geek2 you would have to do a restore to an earlier date when it was working
13:59:10 Geek2 You could do a full backup, wipe it clean and do a reinstall of XP
13:59:23 guest67 if i need to fill in a form and askes what *** no choices show up choose a country nothing there
13:59:29 Geek2 You MIGHT be able to do a XP repair, (depending on your version of XP)
13:59:54 guest67 all i know its xp home
14:00:01 Geek2 interesting. I haven't seen that error before

11:07:06 Beckem nope

11:09:50 Beckem yea
11:09:52 Beckem i think

15:14:39 Geek1 lame
15:14:42 Geek1 well..
15:14:49 Geek1 it must not have deleted the whole C:\
15:14:58 Geek1 otherwise you wouldnt be able to access the systen restore points

15:15:13 Geek1 it saved them on a different partition or drive
15:15:28 tiko i have no system restore points until April 8, which was still when the virus was infected lol
15:15:39 tiko i cant even find my windows 7 cd to restart this whole thing
15:15:49 Geek1 if it deleted the whole C drive
15:15:54 Geek1 you wouldnt be able to boot at all
15:15:58 Geek1 it would have no windows
15:16:07 tiko maybe it hid it somewhere and i cant access it?
15:16:10 Geek1 would give error 'Operating Sytem Not Found"
15:16:14 Geek1 very possible!
16:04:40 Geek1 turn is back on
16:04:50 Geek1 right away, tap f8 over and over
16:04:54 Geek1 till you get to a menu
16:05:02 Geek1 then select "repair computer"
16:05:10 Geek1 after that its pretty self explanatory
16:05:21 Geek1 it will have a facotry restore option...or they might call it "system restore"
16:05:28 Geek1 just make sure you select the FULL system restore
16:05:31 Geek1 the one that does the format
16:05:54 Geek1 and the reinstall of windows and your drivers
16:06:14 Geek1 it will put your computer back to JUST how it was when you first turned it on
16:06:24 Geek1 it will even make you create a user account and password
16:06:48 nate how can i reinstall windows without a disk though

19:25:07 Geek1 Leo, have you tried doing the factory restore?
19:26:08 Leo I dont know how to do a factory restore. I did a system restore to the date of 3.06/2012 about a month prior to problems starting but the thing still wont work.
19:26:35 Leo I dont know which model you mean I am computer illiterate. I have an HP pavilion bought in 2007
19:26:50 Geek1 The model is located on the bottom of the computer
19:27:02 Geek1 If you do the factory restore it will wipe it clean and resinstall windows
19:27:09 Geek1 The instructions are usually very easy
19:27:17 Geek1 so I might not even need to come out to see you
19:27:33 Geek1 and you could save your money.. :-D
19:28:03 Leo actually I have 2 laptops that are acting funny.......I dont mind if you are not too expensive.

20:09:44 Geek1 Blakester: okay so all you do..
20:09:58 Geek1 is turn off the laptop...turn it back on...and right away tap f11 over and over...
20:10:18 Geek1 You will loose everything
20:10:22 Geek1 you know this right?

pv_0a7cacb73f9dfbb574dd9c4455054a3b9e9e110e_458ae854289d74aa5503fb504b1b2734efaa9a88 12/04/2012 20:21:43 Geek1 also...

20:24:16 Mason(On Linux) joins My room

21:06:10 Geek1 blakester, are you sure you did the FULL system restore..teh factory restore? You know you are doing it right because it will warn you saying..'Caution you are about to loose all documents, programs, and data"

15:33:26 Geek1 or
15:33:34 Geek1 you can get an external usb wifi adaptor
15:33:51 Geek1 which I'm reading solved the problem with people with the same situatiion
15:33:56 drat don't have the disk anymore
15:33:58 Geek1 They are cheap..only like $10.
15:34:17 Geek1 Have you tried a system restore to an earlier date?
15:34:27 Geek1 also...have you tried in Safe mode? (just for testing)
15:34:31 drat ok still have the key but no disk
15:34:45 drat yes both
15:35:09 Geek1 look what this person says...
15:35:10 Geek1 if it has a wifi card try disabling it in the BIOS wihile offsite and see if the same behavior occurs again. If the laptop doesnt have Wifi, then Im sure you can find ghostbusting equipment on ebay(they have everything else)
15:35:14 Geek1 this worked by the way
15:35:15 Geek1 for them

21:22:03 Geek1 thats a windows restore
21:22:09 Geek1 (this is the same person as geek1)
21:22:16 Geek1 You need to do a FACTORY restore
21:22:22 Geek1 where it WIPES it clean
21:22:27 Geek1 and starts the computer over
21:22:35 Geek1 You are doing the microsoft system restore
21:22:51 Geek1 If I remmeber right I was having trouble finding the exact instructions for your model
21:22:57 Geek1 Could I get the model again please?
21:23:14 Geek1 I meant this is the same person as Geek2
21:23:19 blakester Well, I went to recovery unbder control panel, then advanced recovery methods and return factory conditions is the option, so thats what i hit, adn it just restarts to black
21:23:41 Geek1 okay...well the regular way to do it is not from inside windows..
21:23:46 Geek1 you have to boot to it
21:23:47 blakester its a HP WA912UA, with windows 7

11:04:45 ninjaghost it wont help a bsod
11:04:50 Geek2 and reinstall windows
11:04:58 Geek2 yes if teh bsod is caused by hardware failure
11:05:08 Geek2 then yes it wont
11:05:14 ninjaghost i tried that was still getting a bsod cuz it was in the log in program
11:05:33 Geek2 but a factory restore...(NOT a windows system restore to an earlier point) will fix all software related problems
11:05:33 ninjaghost wait boot up routines
11:05:43 ninjaghost almost any
11:05:50 ninjaghost but has he tried a system restore
11:05:56 Geek2 ninjaghost...if you are getting BSOD after a factory restore then you are having hardware failure
11:05:56 Geek2
11:06:06 Geek2 a lot of people dont do the factory restore properly
11:06:21 Geek2 or they do teh windwos system resotre to an earlier point
11:06:24 Geek2 which sucks
11:06:25 ninjaghost well i had that before and i folowed what microsfot said but anways what are they saying about my thingy
11:06:30 ninjaghost my error code

11:17:56 jeffoutlaw No pop up at this time. Yes Ido have windows XP. When I try to X out the message only the prog names in the blue shaded area will change but the error message stays
11:17:57 Geek2 yea I know
11:18:09 ninjaghost um hang on il try figuring it out on my own
11:18:32 Geek2 jeffoutlaw, so you don't have a the disc that came with the computer?
11:18:37 ninjaghost ill be back later
11:18:52 Geek2 jeffoutlaw, have you tried a system restore to an earlier date...(the windwos system restore)
11:19:05 Geek2 and you wont need a disc
11:19:05 Geek2 it will set your computer to a date when this wasnt happening
11:19:13 Mason ninjaghost quit (timeout)
11:19:14 Geek2 its not as good as a factory restore but it MIGHT fix your problem
11:22:33 Geek2 but if you have the disc that came with it thats the way to go..trust me ninjaghost doesnt know hat hes talking about
11:23:18 Geek2 .
11:23:18 Geek2

11:52:20 Geek2 the factory reset will restore the computer like new.
11:52:21 ash we just had windows 7 installed when it came out so it has been updated completly. unfortunatly i am not at the computer right now but was hoping i could take some notes on what to do.
11:52:42 Geek2 You need to backup all teh files to a safe place..
11:52:46 Geek2 and then do a factory reset
11:52:57 ninjaghost like an external harddrive
11:52:59 Geek2 NOT a windows system restore to an eralier date
11:53:06 Geek2 but an actual factory reset
11:53:20 Geek2 I can give you instructions if you get me the model
11:53:56 ninjaghost but how old was asked since comps are changed so fast
11:54:02 ash ok let me see if i can get ahold of someone to give me the model #
11:54:07 Geek2 a factory reset wipes it clean, reinstalls windows and all the drivers and software. Your computer will have no "memory" of its previous state. To the computer its exactly as if it were brand new again
11:54:15 ninjaghost comps 2 years old are old to some people
11:55:09 ninjaghost so did u finish copying the code

19:03:47 Geek1 it wipes everything off
19:03:49 sam ohhh sweet!!!
19:03:52 Geek1 starts it over like its brand new
19:03:59 Geek1 just make sure...
19:04:02 sam wow thats awesome!
19:04:11 Geek1 you do the factory restore not the windows system restore to an earlier date..
19:04:26 Geek1 you'll know you are doing the right one because it will warn you that you are abut to loose all your data
19:04:36 sam factory restore not windows sys restore.. got it
19:04:57 Geek1 also..
19:05:04 Geek1 it might be easier to do it..
19:05:16 Geek1 if you start teh factory restore from the start menu while booted in
19:05:19 Geek1 here are instructions
19:05:21 Geek1 http://www.ehow.com/how_6968696_restore-factory-settings-hp-pavilion.html

23:49:20 Geek2 corntoegoblin> u using onboard or dedicated graphics?
23:49:30 oversky onboard
23:49:40 oversky Best buy pc all builded
23:50:04 Geek2 k
23:50:25 Geek2 You could try reinstalling the nvidia drivers
23:50:50 Geek2 or at the very worst...backing up everything..and wiping it to factory state by doing a FULL system restore.
23:50:55 Geek2 that should fix it
23:51:01 Geek2 but its a pain in the butt
23:51:05 oversky Yep
23:51:06 oversky D
23:51:12 oversky How you reinstall
23:51:13 oversky drivers ?
23:51:14 Geek2 ive never seen 75 hz... maybe ur imagining things and the problem isnt ur computer haha

00:27:04 Geek2 thats how you get to it
00:27:16 Geek2 YOU WILL LOOSE ALL FILES ON C AND D
00:27:37 oversky Yep
00:27:46 Geek2 also...
00:28:00 Geek2 it mihgt not be alt+10...it usually is...
00:28:15 Geek2 but when it first turns on.... you should see an option for system restore
00:28:23 Geek2 and it will tell you the command
00:28:39 Geek2 but try holding down alt and tapping f10 when the computer FIRST turns on
00:28:41 Geek2 fo that first
00:28:47 Geek2 *do that first
00:28:57 Geek2 and see if that takes you to the system restore
00:28:59 oversky Ok
00:29:08 oversky That it ?
00:29:49 Geek2 you just choose the ACER factory restore
00:29:56 Geek2 not the windows system restore to an earlier point
00:29:58 Geek2 thats NOT it
00:30:11 Geek2 but it should be alt + f10 to get to us
00:30:12 Geek2 *it
00:30:25 oversky ok
00:30:27 oversky so after
00:30:32 oversky alt + f10
00:30:36 oversky i click acer factory restore

13:19:49 celceta ahhhh f8
13:19:51 celceta
13:19:55 Geek3 just make sure...
13:19:56 celceta i was tyring f11
13:20:08 Geek3 you select "Dell factory restore"...not...
13:20:15 Geek3 windows system restore to an earlier point
13:20:22 Geek3 people get them mixed up a lot
13:20:25 Geek3 you will loose everythin of course
13:20:28 Geek3 I know you know that
13:20:31 Geek3 but just have to warn you
13:20:39 celceta kk ima try if doest work il be back lol. and yes thats what im trying to do lol
13:20:48 Geek3 k
13:21:19 Geek2 celceta quit (timeout)

14:16:00 joe yep#

14:27:06 Geek1 ok
14:27:10 Geek1 please go on
14:27:35 Harry but i system restored it, and now whenever i boot up past the "starting windows" screen it will go black but with a movable cursor (i think this is know as a KSOD?)
14:27:40 Geek1 Cory quit (timeout)

14:28:00 Geek1 even in safe mode?

14:28:04 Harry yep
14:28:18 Harry any ideas?
14:28:22 Geek1 Did you do a FULL factory restore or just a windows sytmem restore to an earlier point in time?
14:28:35 Harry system restore i believe
14:28:37 Geek1 a FULL factory restore WIPES everything
14:28:52 Harry i dont think i did a full factory restore
14:28:59 Harry ima guess taht gets rid of the OS though
14:29:05 Geek1 A full factory restore is really your only option

15:48:16 Geek2 [color=#008000] worst case scenario you can do a system restore to an older point and get it back...

15:48:31 .-IamGOD-. wats with system restore??
15:48:46 .-IamGOD-. oh BTW geek
15:48:50 Geek2 [color=#008000] Just a wnidows system restore to an earlier date
15:48:59 Geek2 [color=#008000] but that shouldnt be necessary
15:49:09 Geek2 [color=#008000] thats just a worst case scenario
15:49:19 Geek2 [color=#008000] he should be able to renable it in the device manager
15:49:22 .-IamGOD-. before u interrupt me my dad worked 16 years NORTEL networks
15:49:42 .-IamGOD-. he said wiping the comp will not solve teh problem

15:30:45 Harry but usually i can just press the turn on button, it will turn off, and i turn it on, and it works as normal. then i got it one time and now after like 2mins of the pc booting up, it just restarts and gives that error again
15:31:01 Harry so i went into safe mode (which worked)
15:31:08 Harry and system restored it to teh last point

11:59:37 Geek there is different options for the repair
11:59:41 harry system restore

12:00:00 harry repair system at startup
12:00:09 Geek It probably will work, but there is a very good chance you can have some problems
12:00:15 Geek oh thats not it
12:00:20 Geek try that though
12:00:22 Geek thats safe
12:00:29 Geek but thats not coming from the disc

12:03:37 Geek you have to boot to the disc at startup by going to the boot menu
12:03:50 Geek Im pretty sure you were talking about the startup repair
12:03:55 Geek which doesnt require the windows 7 disc
12:04:01 Geek if you havent done that yet, DEF do that
12:04:08 Geek it could fix your problem
12:04:23 Geek also keep trying to get into safe mode...then you could do a system restore to a previous date

23:35:48 Geek but If he doesnt call me back by morning I can still meet up
23:36:13 Geek lexie thats not the right system restore
23:36:22 Geek lexie89, you want to do a FACTORY restore

23:41:32 Geek if you got a new HD then the factory restore partiton is bye bye
23:41:41 lainers i have a dell inspiron, got it a year in a half ago
23:41:51 Geek you are confusing the FACTORY restore with the Windows System restore to a previous date. There is a HUGE difference
23:42:11 lexie89 i thought it was irrelevent. but apparently not.
23:42:15 Geek lainers, one sec I'll get you the instructions
23:42:29 Geek The factory restore will only be on teh original hard drive
23:43:09 lainers all microsoft stuff will still be on there right?
23:43:17 Geek lainers, for the Dells there are two possible ways to access the full factory restore. (rememeber this will delte all your programs, files, and settings)
23:43:20 Geek turn off the computer.
23:43:22 Geek turn it back on

23:45:43 Geek lainers, yes it wipes the hard drive and reinstalls windows and all the drivers and software that came with your computer
23:45:50 Geek its just like a factory reset on a phone
23:45:59 lexie89 cracker jacks. so i have to remember the date that i got the new hd?
23:45:59 Geek it puts it back to exactly how it was out-of-the-box
23:46:09 Geek lexie89, nooo
23:46:25 Geek lexie89, the factory restore points and the system restore points are all gone
23:46:36 Geek you need to order the factory restore disc from lenovo
23:46:41 Geek it costs money
23:46:45 Geek or get your hands on a windows disc
23:47:09 lexie89 serious? can i just buy a new computer

00:16:13 Kayla yeah

00:16:26 Kayla yeah I pushed it
00:16:55 Geek Kayla, did it ask you if you wanted to do a system restore when it was first loading safe mode? (it should have)
00:18:16 Kayla nope
00:18:40 Kayla when I hit f8 like you did, it gave me the safemode choices
00:18:55 Kayla I hit he one you said
00:19:12 Geek yea but...
00:19:19 Kayla then it loaded up like it always does, but with bigger writing and icons, and a black background
00:19:53 Geek then it loads safe mode up..and it should bring up a box with a caution sign....it says something like " Are you sure you want to access safe mode? Would you like to do a System recovery instead?"
00:20:11 Kayla nope, that never came up

00:31:59 Geek turn if back on..and right away try f10

09:03:24 mik Mac was running fine, yesterday I went to get on and it was locked up. I restarted and got the ? mark. Shut it down for the day while I went to work, got home started up, all looked fine but itunes was loading s-l-o-w. I wanted to quit itunes. Then discovered I could not quit or force quit. I could not select any programs. It doesn't recognize USB jump drive, external hard drive or blank disk.
09:04:10 Geek so when you did the FULL factory restore, it wiped it clean...just like its a new computer?? The factory restore is supposed to also install the drivers././. but its worth downloading the drivers manually to see if that works
09:04:15 Geek mik, one sec
09:04:59 Geek kevin, I need the full model number...thats only half of it

10:11:54 peter yes for sure
10:12:30 Willow My computer turns on, there's the HP blue screen giving selections for boot menu, etc, then it gets to the black loading screen and can't find storage devices
10:12:58 Willow I've tried going to the boot menu, but it doesn't take me there every time, and when it actually does it doesn't recognize the Install CD in the CD tray.
10:13:24 Willow I did manage to get it to system repair, but when it gave me the option to run system restore it said it couldn't find the restore file.
10:13:52 peter have you checked your pc internal connections
10:14:24 Willow Yes. Everything is hooked up properly. I double checked the hard drive as it was saying it couldn't find it, but it's hooked up

23:19:57 robflo listen i know is hard to describe what the problem is with the screen maybe i can video tape it and look for someone with the same problem
23:20:13 lainers It seems to be linked to registry erros I think and i tried to get sofware to fix it but they say its locked?
23:20:33 Geek2 lainers, what exactly are the problems you are having?
23:21:04 lainers I can only boot in safe mode, when i try to boot normal when i log in all that appears is a black screen
23:21:44 Geek2 robflo, its a hardware problem. You arent going to find a magic solution..if you cant see any text or anything except an explosion or blackness...then you are having a hardware related issue. You will have to take it in.
23:22:00 Geek2 lainers, Have you tried doing a system restore to an earlier date?
23:22:35 robflo ok, got it
23:22:37 lainers I have, sadly right now all the comes up is the system restore date when i did a back up
23:22:45 Geek2 robflo, here is the link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=234-PmmdK-I
23:22:47 lainers but i cant find my back up drive -_-
23:22:56 Geek2 robflo, check the reviews on whoever you use and call around
23:23:10 robflo great
23:23:10 Geek2 you can find reviews on google places, yelp.com, yahoo local
23:23:20 robflo will do
23:23:25 Geek2 robflo, I recommend staying away from the big corporate places
23:23:31 lainers But if im able to do things in safe mode and all why cant I find a solution to fix it?
23:23:37 Geek2 robflo, they usually charge way too much and have bad reviews
23:23:58 Geek2 lainers, you still havent told me what the problem even is
23:24:15 Geek2 lainers, but a system restore to an earlier date will restore all the settings to a previous date
23:24:31 lainers I cant do that because i dont have a backup drive
23:24:33 lainers to restore it
23:24:55 Geek2 lainers, let say you go back to feb 14, but you've created documents since then, the system restore will NOT delete those documents. It only restores the previous settings, and will fix the registry
23:25:00 Geek2 noooo
23:25:05 Geek2 its a builtin program in windows
23:25:09 Geek2 called System Restore
23:25:17 lainers Noooo i know what youre talkign about
23:25:21 Geek2 start system tools - system restore
23:25:33 Geek2 you dont use another hard drive
23:25:46 Geek2 there are two types of system restores. A full factory restore
23:25:46 lainers back up drive
23:25:53 Geek2 and a windows system restore to an earlier date
23:25:56 Geek2 noo
23:26:04 lainers Nono im goign to show you what im talking about
23:26:06 Geek2 the system restore I'm talking about has NOTHING to do with a back up drive
23:26:16 Geek2 you are thinking of a different system restore
23:26:19 Geek2 I know its confusing
23:26:32 Geek2 the system restore I'm talking about is stored on the local hard drive
23:26:40 Geek2 it sets the system back to a previous date
23:26:56 Geek2 you could do just a week back or usually you can go months and months back..you choose on a calendar
23:27:00 Geek2 it doesnt delete files
23:27:03 Geek2 and its 100% reversible
23:27:07 Geek2 you NEVER use another drive
23:27:07 lainers I know what youre talkign about
23:27:10 lainers IT WONT LET ME
23:27:28 lainers ive gone to system recovery options
23:27:31 lainers i click on system restore
23:27:41 Geek2 and you chose a date on the calendar?
23:27:45 lainers it gives me one option
23:27:49 Geek2 A lot of the time some of the dates wont work
23:28:00 lainers description says "system image restore point" type is "backup"
23:28:03 Geek2 only one option in the date calendar?
23:28:08 Geek2 nooo
23:28:13 Geek2 thats a different system restore
23:28:19 Geek2 there are multiple system restores
23:28:32 Geek2 the one I'm talking about is the WINDOWS system restore to an earlier date
23:28:36 lainers Then it says the backup drive cannot be foudn system restore is looking for restore points on your backup
23:28:39 Geek2 you are talking about the manufacter system restore
23:28:53 Kramer joins My room
23:29:02 Geek2 You are doing a different type of system restore
23:29:16 Geek2 What version of windows are you running?
23:29:26 lainers windows 7
23:29:30 Geek2 Just please trust me on this and follow the instructions. Its safe and reversible
23:29:45 Geek2 k I'll get you clear instructions
23:29:46 Geek2 one sec
23:30:08 lainers Please note I can only run in safe mode.
23:30:22 robflo just wacted, bad geeks
23:30:23 Geek2 thats okay
23:30:31 Geek2 MOST people run it in safe mode
23:30:41 Geek2 System Restore will restart your PC.
23:30:52 Geek2 Open System Restore by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button. In the search box, type System Restore, and then, in the list of results, click System Restore. Administrator permission required
23:31:24 Geek2 If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
23:31:35 Geek2 Follow the steps in the wizard to choose a restore point and restore your computer.
23:31:35 lainers One moment starting my computer up..

23:32:18 lainers Instructions come up when i start safe mode

23:33:16 Geek2 but do it this way
23:33:36 Geek2 Open System Restore by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button. In the search box, type System Restore, and then, in the list of results, click System Restore. Administrator permission required
23:33:45 Geek2 you do that while in safe mode
23:34:09 Geek2 If that doesnt work...
23:34:30 Geek2 then back up your files to an external source and do a FULL factory restore/reset
23:34:30 lainers No restore points have been created on your computer
23:34:42 Geek2 lame
23:34:54 Geek2 somehow your system restore got turned off
23:35:02 Geek2 is your hard drive filled with data?
23:35:08 lainers Well actually i did a full factory restore last week
23:35:20 lainers and i had stuff backed up
23:35:36 lainers but i lost that so I suppose i will have to back it up with a cd -_-
23:35:42 lainers and do a nother factory restore
23:35:47 Geek2 and it WIPED everything off of it? You had to create a new account and everything? The computer acted JUST how it did when it was brand new?
23:36:02 Geek2 yea

00:11:21 Drew Hello, Guys Everytime i click on a browser like internet explorer and, mozilla firefox or AOL my whole computer freezes.. but, they work fine in safe mode ( im in safe mode right know) and the games that ive downloaded that are online work fine on regular mode

00:13:13 Geek2 robflo, cables come un loose ALL THE TIME out of nowhere. its strange I know
00:13:24 Geek2 robflo, but its most likely the inverter
00:13:42 Geek2 Drew I wrote a guide that talks about the different system restores http://www.eugenecomputergeeks.com/how-to-fix-any-computer/How-Do-I-Fix-My-Computer.html

13:15:39 Jess I've had java issues in the past which is why I was leaning more toward a java issue, to be honest.
13:15:49 CooperG Cory quit (timeout)
13:15:57 Geek but the error message is refering to dvsservice.exe
13:16:27 Geek where are you seeing the error?
13:16:43 Geek and what exactly does the error message say?
13:17:01 Geek Jess, have you tried doing a windows system restore to an earlier date? Its safe and reversible
13:17:22 Jess It just pops up when I'm running things. At the time I was running Winamp, Skype, Spotify (on pause), Facebook and have folders open.
13:17:25 Jess The message itself says...
13:18:12 Jess 'DVS Service Module has stopped working' A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.
13:18:31 Jess It never made an attempt at closing any windows, though.
13:18:46 Jess It popped up most frequently while I was running a Steam game for a few minutes to pass the time.
13:18:55 Geek DVS Service Module is the Free Studio application
13:19:09 Geek after uninstalling Free Studio, try restarting...

11:26:51 Geek in the command prompt
11:27:11 peter ok go to run and enter this command matt

17:10:25 tizzy1963 whats that
17:10:25 Geek doing a system restore to an earlier date

10:20:16 Geek goto..
10:20:29 Geek start -> accessories -> system tools -> system restore
10:20:36 Geek and restore PC to an earlier date.
10:20:42 Geek a date when the resolution was correct
10:20:45 hello i try
10:20:55 hello but honesty it wont work
10:20:56 hello :/
10:20:57 Geek the system restore to previous date it reversible and safe
10:21:03 Geek why wont it work>?
10:21:20 hello i dont know what i should be doing
10:21:30 Geek http://bink.nu/forums/t/2113.aspx
10:21:30 hello i tap f8
10:21:38 hello but it wont show anythign
10:21:38 Geek Here is a forum with someone with the same problems
10:21:42 Geek tap f8 at startup

18:50:31 Geek just goto http://update.microsoft.com
18:50:54 jxdama there is a link on the aol homepage to upgrade
18:51:02 Geek oh ok
18:51:12 Geek jxdama if you are worried....
18:51:16 jxdama when i upgraded java i couldnt get into chat rooms
18:51:18 Geek you can create a system restore point
18:51:24 jxdama finally fixed that
18:51:34 Geek thats probably the chat rooms fault no?
18:51:39 jxdama no
18:51:44 Geek jxdama, my suggestion....
18:51:49 jxdama couldnt get into any chat rooms
18:51:53 Geek jxdama, switch to google chrome or firefox
18:51:58 jxdama i think you helped with that
18:52:07 jxdama i have firefox
18:52:09 Geek ah sounds like the installation must have failed causing your java to crash
18:52:28 Geek out of all browsers, google chrome is fastest and most stable
18:52:41 Geek it also loads web sites much better than IE and is less prone to viruses and spyware
18:52:49 jxdama i tried google chrome
18:52:59 Geek do you know how to create a system restore point?
18:53:04 jxdama seemed very confusing and cumbersome
18:53:20 Geek its just a bit different. Firefox is a bit more like IE
18:53:36 Geek Google chrome is actually pretty easy to use once you understand the interface
18:53:41 jxdama i couldnt figure out how to make aol my homepage, or pin my favorites to the page
18:53:47 Geek for favorites they are called bookmarks and you just press on the star
18:54:06 Geek to make AOL home page..just click on the wrench and its in the settings there
18:54:18 jxdama thanks

18:54:29 Geek since its more like IE
18:54:37 Geek deneb, whats the problem you are having?
18:54:40 jxdama i have firefox
18:54:55 Geek jxdama, I suggest you do the IE upgrade BUT
18:54:57 deneb mine is a long one, i shall start typing lol
18:55:02 Geek make sure to create a system restore point
18:55:09 Geek so that if you have any problems...
18:55:11 Geek you can restore back
18:55:14 Geek just goto...
18:55:32 Geek start -> all programs -> accessories -> system tools -> system restore
18:55:35 Geek and create a restore point
18:55:39 Geek then do the IE upgrade
18:55:51 Geek I still highly recommend switching to firefox
18:56:08 Geek oh and to pin things in google chome...just click the star button
18:56:14 Geek and then choose where you want it to go
18:56:16 ant firefox way better then IE suk
18:56:23 Geek "bookmarks bar"

19:34:07 jxdama nothing about service pack after that
19:34:13 Geek wierd
19:34:17 jxdama build6000
19:35:01 Geek Are you 100% you ran windows updates correctly? It usually has to check for updates and takes a few minutes and then will start the updates including the upgrade to service pack 2
19:35:51 jxdama im sure
19:36:25 Geek You can try doing a system restore to an earlier date. You wont loose any documents
19:36:30 Geek and its reversible and safe
19:36:46 Geek just goto start -> all programs -> accessories -> system tools > system restore
19:36:51 Geek and choose a previous date
19:37:06 Geek NOT to get mixed up with the FULL factory restore which will wipe everything and start over
19:37:35 Geek if the windows system restore to an earlier date doesnt fix, then I recommend backing up everything somewhere safe and external, and then doing the FULL factory restore
19:37:48 Geek I wrote a guide http://www.eugenecomputergeeks.com/how-to-fix-any-computer/How-Do-I-Fix-My-Computer.html
19:38:39 jxdama restore to what?
19:39:11 Geek restore your computer to a previous date
19:39:17 jxdama why?
19:39:19 Geek when it was not having problemms
19:39:31 jxdama this isnt a problem
19:39:43 jxdama all im trying to do is upgrade to IE9
03:01:44 Thomson geek alisha quit (timeout)
03:01:52 Thomson Clund, I'm on a laptop. Would it differ at all with this? I'm not familiar with hardware, sadly.
03:02:24 Clund not really
03:02:39 Thomson Okay.
03:02:42 Clund laptops have more often better restoring routines
03:02:50 Thomson I found something called System restore. Should I do that?
03:02:51 Clund by seller
03:02:55 Clund yep
03:02:57 Clund right that
03:03:24 Thomson Hm...
03:03:31 Thomson I don't know why, but I have a bad feeling about this.
03:03:40 Thomson God, I'm tired.
03:04:02 Clund brb

22:23:25 Geek yea
22:23:34 Geek try tapping f8 when the PC first turn on and then goto safe mode
22:23:34 Geek then
22:23:37 jxdama then i turn the comp off with the button and turn it back on
22:23:44 Geek goto
22:23:53 Geek start -> all programs -> accessories -> system tools -> system restore
22:23:56 Geek and restore to an earlier date
22:24:02 Geek or
22:24:03 Geek try
22:24:03 geek alisha oh didnt hear a ping lol
22:24:10 Geek Go to last known good configuration
22:24:27 Geek to goto last know config...
22:24:28 Geek Start your computer.
22:39:54 jxdama can you give me instructions on factory restore?
22:40:06 Geek I wrote a guide http://www.eugenecomputergeeks.com/how-to-fix-any-computer/How-Do-I-Fix-My-Computer.html
22:40:11 Geek Whats the model?
22:40:25 Geek and maker?
22:40:28 Geek one sec brb
22:40:37 jxdama by the way, i thin as soon as the comp comes on there is a f-11 on the bottom right that says system restore
22:41:01 jxdama hit f-11 when it comes on?
22:41:05 jxdama i have vista
22:41:34 jxdama HP
22:43:02 Geek yea
22:43:13 Geek make sure you files are backed up first!
22:43:17 Geek backed up somewhere safe
22:43:22 Geek preferably an external hard drive

22:45:43 jxdama what i mean is do i go in safe to do the factory restore
22:45:52 Geek no
22:46:02 Geek you tap f11 when the PC starts up
22:46:07 Geek dont goto safe mode
22:46:12 jxdama ok
22:46:14 Geek there are two types of system restores
22:46:23 Geek you are doing the FULL factory restore
22:46:31 Geek are your files backed up somewhere safe already?
22:46:43 Geek cuz doing the full factory restore will delete all your files
22:46:55 jxdama all i need backed up is my documents
22:47:03 jxdama i have that on a disc already
22:47:05 Geek then dont do the factory restore yey
22:47:06 Geek *yet

22:47:15 Geek then do the facftory restore
22:47:18 jxdama all i use my comp for is to get on the internet
22:48:03 Geek Well if you dont want to do the factory restore then just use google chrome or firefox
22:48:12 Geek or use old IE sometimes
22:48:36 jxdama but what if the comp freezes up tomorrow morning again
22:49:07 jxdama are you saying go to system restore and restore to may 7th, before i put the service pak on?
22:49:22 Geek yea you can try that
22:49:26 jxdama actually it was thursday night i think
22:49:52 Geek but first I'd try doing "go to last known good configuration" you tap f8 at startup to get to that...if that doesnt work THEN goto safe mode and restore to an earlier date
22:50:02 jxdama restore from safe mode?
22:50:36 jxdama ok, can i have instructions for last known good config?
22:50:46 Geek I just told you
22:50:52 Geek tap f8 at startup
22:50:54 Geek then select it
22:50:59 jxdama got that
22:51:03 Geek or just read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307852
22:51:49 jxdama When you see the "Please select the operating system to start" message, press the F8 key.
22:51:57 jxdama that i dont understand
22:52:10 Geek if that doesnt work.. then do a system restore from safe mode..you get to safe mode by also pressing f8 ... you can read about vista system resore which is different then full factory restore...goto http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/What-is-System-Restore
22:52:16 jxdama you mean as soon as i hit the button?
22:52:29 Geek you tap f8 RIGHT AWAY when it turns on
22:52:35 jxdama stay with last know config
22:52:44 jxdama for last know config?
22:52:56 Geek those sites are very clear
22:53:06 Geek for last know config READ http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307852
22:53:28 Geek if that doesnt work do a system restore from safe mode READ http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/What-is-System-Restore
22:53:57 jxdama im reading last known config
22:54:03 jxdama but im confused
22:54:45 jxdama does "please select the operating system to start" message automaticaaly comes on?
22:55:55 Geek not always
22:55:59 Geek just ignore that
22:56:04 Geek just tap f8 at startup
22:56:11 jxdama so when do i hit f-8?

22:17:12 Geek download all the graphics driver updates
22:17:24 Geek I'm pretty sure thats your model
22:17:36 CandyB What does upgrading my graphics driver do exactly?
22:17:37 Geek it should have a sticker on the computer itself with the exact model info
22:17:59 Geek it just updates the driver. Fixes problems and hopefully will improve performance
22:18:09 Geek make sure to create a system restore point
22:18:12 Geek before doing it
22:18:14 Geek just to be safe
22:18:25 CandyB Ah. Will do thank you so much.
22:18:27 aron joins My room
22:18:31 Geek also if something goes wrong...select "go to last known good configuration" at startup
22:18:35 CandyB Mind if I ask another question?
22:18:40 Geek if you dont see it, then tap f8 at startup

23:20:46 Geek yea fake e-mails from companies are super popular right now
23:20:48 Caroline So back on topic lol should i be worried that my computer won't start again if it updates again because i'm thinking it's those 13 updates from hell
23:20:51 Geek and they look more real than ever
23:21:02 Caroline esepcially since i had to restore my system to an earlier point in time
23:21:09 Geek yea
23:21:19 Geek Id create a new system restore point
23:21:22 Geek and then do the updates
23:21:23 Geek that
23:21:31 Geek way you can restore to exactly that time and day
23:21:36 Geek if the updates do it again
23:21:47 Geek my hunch is the updates will be fine this time
23:21:55 Caroline Well that's the thing if i do a new system restore point to like 2 days ago when it was fine won't it just do the updates over again because it's like they weren't done just like what happened today?
23:21:58 Geek but its not unheard of for updates to screw up a system
23:22:06 Caroline Are you a male by any chance?
23:22:11 Caroline I promise I"m not going to flirt
23:22:12 Caroline Lol
23:22:17 Geek you can turn off automatic updates
23:22:20 Geek even in safe mode
23:22:21 Geek yea I am

23:23:07 Geek A guess from experience
23:23:17 Caroline Lol a guess from experience can be trusted at all times
23:23:18 Geek I have seen updates screw up systems before
23:23:20 Geek but its pretty rare
23:23:32 Geek but
23:23:37 Geek if you create a new system restore point
23:23:43 Geek you'll be safe
23:23:50 Geek and then you can just do the updates
23:23:53 Geek and if something goes wrong
23:23:54 Caroline Sooo my lovely Cameron, how exactly do I make a system restore point?
23:23:56 Geek just do another restore
23:24:03 Geek just..
23:24:19 Caroline I've done it before on my toshiba but my toshiba was crap and i don't wanna screw my HP baby up I'd be heartbroken
23:24:25 Geek goto start -> all programs -> accessories > system tools > system restore
23:24:39 Geek there is a text link that says "create new restore point"
23:25:03 Geek that might not be the exact terminology but if its not "create a new restore point" its very similar to that
23:25:21 Caroline Omg I got so much crap on this thing that i didn't know about lol
23:25:44 Geek also make sure you back up your files to an external hard drive or at the very least usb flash stick or DVD's
23:25:53 Caroline Automatic restore point it says is on 5/4/12
23:25:58 Geek always good to make regular backups
23:26:06 Geek yea so create a NEW restore point

23:26:28 Geek you can actually set how often you want it to create them
23:26:40 Geek or you can set how much hard drive space you want to give to it
23:26:47 Caroline Oohh cool
23:26:48 Geek some people like having lots of dates
23:26:51 Caroline I feel so in control lol
23:26:58 Geek and will dedicate half there hard drive to system restores
23:27:15 Caroline Well I don't wanna go back so far that it just wipes out all the recent updates because won't I have to redo them all or will they stick?
23:27:23 Geek I'm a big fan of WIPING it clean and doing FULL factory restores. It makes the computer just like brand new.
23:27:43 Geek it wont stick
23:27:46 Caroline Like i said i'm worried that the 13 updates from hell are just going to redo themselves because my computer has never updated twice in a row when i shut it down
23:27:48 Geek you'll have to redo them
23:27:59 Geek but the system restore to an ealier date it reversible
23:28:07 Caroline but with the bios updates my computer freezes shuts off turns on does updates for an hour or two wasting my time lol
23:28:30 Geek Lots of the time a PC needs to update twice in a row and needs two restarts. Hell sometimes I'll have to go through 4 or 5 sets of updates
23:28:34 Geek with 5 reboots
23:28:46 Caroline Okay. So if this one is the 13 updates and my computer doesn't start tomorrow when I wake up just put all my junk on a flashdrive and factory restore or whatever my system?
23:28:56 Caroline Oh well that blows =/
23:29:00 Geek are you sure you are talking about windows updates and not HP updates?
23:29:13 Caroline I can honestly say that I've never had that problem

10:40:47 johnny 0xc000000f
10:40:51 Geek2 What you should do....
10:41:13 Geek2 Turn on the PC and tap f8 and goto "Last known Googe Configuration"
10:41:16 Geek2 (if you can)
10:41:27 Geek2 if you cant get to "Last Known Good Configuration)
10:41:45 Geek2 then you need to goto 'safe mode' and do a system restore to the earliest date
10:41:49 Geek2 so turn off the computer
10:42:05 Geek2 turn it back on. Then tap f8 right when the computer turns on
10:43:03 Geek2 I doubt avast would cause such a serious error. Its a REALLY popular program
10:43:28 Geek2 if avast did cause it then you should be able to get in through safe mode and restore to an earlier date. You wont loose and files or anything
10:43:29 johnny when i turn on the computer and tap f8 it just goes back to the same sceen
10:43:43 Geek2 Clund {Desktop} quit (timeout)
10:43:44 Geek2 thats not good

10:53:07 Geek2 but just do safe mode
10:53:12 Geek2 keep it simple
10:53:15 Geek2 once you are in
10:53:23 johnny ya im in
10:53:40 johnny its loading files
10:53:45 Geek2 goto start -> search "System Restore" and choose a date in the calendar to restore to
10:54:17 Geek2 if serching for SYstem restore doesnt bring it up then just goto Start > all proprams -> accessories > system tools > system restore
10:54:35 Geek2 choose a date that is recent not too long ago
10:54:40 johnny it went back to that same screen again
10:54:42 Geek2 it only restores settings
10:54:48 Geek2 ouch really?
10:54:53 Geek2 wont even goto safe mode?
10:55:03 johnny nope
10:55:10 Geek2 Are there files on it that are important?

12:25:56 Geek * Remember if you want to SAVE
12:27:15 Geek I used open office throughout college and high school and never had a problem. None of the teachers can tell you didnt use Microsoft Office if you save it correctly.. (which isnt hard to do at all)
12:27:24 Geek brb
12:27:45 12345 ok thanks :)
12:27:57 12345 robflo quit (timeout)

12:35:25 Geek thats a different syste restore
12:35:32 Geek you want to do the FULL factory restore
12:35:49 Geek the system restore you just tried is just the windows system restore to an earlier date
12:35:55 Geek COMPLETLY different then what you wantr
12:36:02 Geek who makes your computer?
12:36:13 Geek and do you know the model number or product number?
12:38:41 12345 its an HP. model # G71-34OUS my product number has been rubbed off. last time the tech had to look up a new one i think

13:03:12 Geek Thanks
13:03:23 Clund {Desktop} geek, i need a linux text editor with syntax highlighting (no vim or emacs)
13:03:33 Clund {Desktop} for html
13:03:47 Geek Clund, for html I really like Quantum plus
13:03:58 Geek but I personally use vim
13:03:59 12345 ok so what u said worked and now im on the system recovery options. do i click in the system restore or start up repair?
13:04:02 Geek why not VIM?
13:04:03 Clund {Desktop} is it in repos?
13:04:23 Clund {Desktop} er.... only for VERY geeky things
13:04:26 Clund {Desktop} the vim
13:04:28 Geek 12345, system restore most likely. Just make sure its not the windows system restore to an earlier date. If you see a calendar then you know you arent in the right one
13:04:30 robflo nothing
13:04:49 Geek you'll know you are doing the right system restore when it warns you that its about to delete everything and restore to factory state
13:04:49 Geek Joe quit (timeout)
13:05:15 Geek robflo, some models make it very hard to find the CMOS battery. There should be a hardware manual for your laptop online
13:05:38 Geek robflo, whats the model number again?
13:05:51 Geek CLund, yea Quantum Plus is in the repos
13:05:54 Clund {Desktop} quantum plus is not in repos :(

13:06:01 Geek Quanta

13:09:30 Geek how old is your computer 12345 and could i have the model number again?
13:09:44 Geek Every HP comes with a factory restore option unless its really old
13:09:58 Geek all vista/win 7 HP computers have a factory restore
13:10:02 Geek you are just having trouble getting to it
13:10:37 Geek 12345, read this guide by HP http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-Systems-and/How-do-I-RESTORE-my-system-to-the-original-factory-settings/td-p/50113
13:12:03 12345 its not that old its like 4 years old. it dosent show that option. i swear. it has start up repair. then system restore but it says under it restore windows to an earlier point and time and when i click on it says no system restore point then theres system images
13:12:33 Geek yea thats a different system restore
13:12:43 Geek what version of windows did that computer come with?
13:12:53 Geek if you dont know there is a sticker located on the computer itself
13:13:03 12345 system image recovery * and windows memory diagnostic and command prompt thats it.
13:13:22 Geek what happens when you goto system image recovery?

13:38:12 Geek meatball, have you tried booting to "safe mode with networking"?
13:38:20 meatball yes

14:46:14 charles1 without a disk drive you are going to have a difficult time. You need a DVD RW
14:46:45 meatball i figuared that, this might be to old to save
14:46:55 charles1 ask eugencomputergeeks if they can put the program on a flash drive for you. It will cost a little
14:47:06 charles1 how old is it?
14:47:18 meatball beats me
14:47:24 mike well, i just remembered that i did a system restore and that restore it to factory default. it did not work
14:48:15 charles1 yeah cause you didn't actually restore it to factory default and the problem could me the monitor as in going on its way out.
14:48:23 charles1 things do wear out
14:48:52 mike i tried and connected the pc with another monitor and the colors are still bad
14:49:18 charles1 nice job of elimination. good for you.
14:49:50 charles1 so go to control pannel and look into display
14:50:08 mike i have put a new video card inside the pc. could that be the problem?
14:50:30 charles1 was it normal before you put the card in?

15:44:18 charles1 Originally I believe it was installing a video card at all instead of using the onboard sound I believe.
15:44:30 charles1 Playing movies there isn't a problem
15:44:54 wigge but I turn the power switch off, remove the power chord. keep one hand on metal while fixing then plug the chord back in and then turn switch on
15:45:04 Geek charles1, does the video on this site have the same problem>? http://www.808.dk/?code-html-5-video
15:45:23 charles1 yeah wiggie I understand but it can still hapen. All sorts of variables.
15:45:41 Geek Samm, have you tried booting into safe mode and seeing if the problem is happening there? Also have you tried doing a windows system restore to an eralier date?
15:45:43 charles1 I know you would like me to say things are going to be ok but I can't say that.
15:45:57 wigge hah I know
15:46:07 charles1 I'll try geek
15:46:19 Geek that is a non flash video
15:46:21 Geek html 5 video
15:46:23 meatball joins My room
15:46:29 Geek I want to see if that has problems or not

21:46:25 Geek I'm thinking maybe the new mint is the same
21:46:36 Ant maybe
21:47:13 Geek meatball, nope. You can get into safe moed right?
21:47:27 Geek oh yea I remember now
21:47:32 meatball i am now
21:48:01 Geek And you've tried restoring to the earliest date possible in system restore? Sorry to repeat myself I get mixed up with all the problems people have
21:48:28 meatball well i thought i was i forgot i shut it down.yes i did as far as it will go back
21:48:29 Geek try going back to the earliest date possible in the calendar, go back monthss and months ago if possible by using the windows system restore
21:48:53 Geek then you absoluetly need to reinstall windows
21:49:02 meatball lol
21:49:05 Geek try and get your hands on an external DVDRW optical drive
21:49:15 Geek or put XP on a usb
21:49:15 Geek or
21:49:32 Geek switch to Linux Mint, which goes on a USB much easier than XP
21:50:33 meatball i just hoped i didnt have to do that, but i really appricate your good advice and help
11:10:22 Geek Mizzperfect from the error it was giving you about needing to reinstall windows, it sounds like you need to do a full factory restore. Do you have important files on the computer that aren't backed up?
11:10:22 mizzperfect i just clicked on safe mode its loading
11:10:30 Geek oh good
11:10:40 Geek so then maybe you didnt reinstall windows
11:10:49 Geek once safe mode loads....
11:11:08 Geek goto start > all programs > accessories > system tools > system restore
11:11:12 Geek and restore to an earlier date
11:11:16 mizzperfect but it keep going back to the same black screen
11:11:24 Geek give it a little bit more time
11:11:35 Geek another thing you can try...
11:11:41 Geek turn it off..
11:11:48 Geek turn it back on and tap f8 just like you did
11:11:55 Geek instead of choosing safe mode choose...
